Crossovers were originally conceived to fulfill the need for roominess and a higher driver position characteristic of SUVs, a couple of popular features with growing families, while providing car-like economy and handling. Using the body-on-frame design of trucks, SUVs possess a lot of excess power and the poor mileage that accompanies it. To achieve car-like performance, crossovers rely on the same unibody construction as cars.

The Honda CR-V was one of the first vehicles to use this design feature, and 20 years later, this crossover line continues as a popular choice among families. Sporting similar dimensions and capabilities, the Nissan Rogue is a newer competitor in the crossover field. To see how the 2015 versions of these challengers stack up against each other, check out the following features.

Rider Comfort

While the CR-V supplies a bit less headroom and legroom in the front seats than the Rogue, it makes up for it with more space in the second seat row. In both rows, it offers up to two extra inches in shoulder and hip room. Going beyond the Nissan Rogue to provide an enjoyable trip for second row passengers, air ducts funnel heating and air conditioning directly to them. One more feature that adds to the CR-V’s comfort is soundproofing insulation that absorbs noises from the exterior and engine compartment.

Engine Performance

As was pointed out earlier, fuel savings is a big part of the crossover’s allure. To keep gas consumption as low as possible, both the CR-V and the Rogue rely on a four-cylinder engine coupled to a continuously variable transmission or CVT. The CR-V contains a 2.4 liter motor that manages a pleasant 27 mpg in town and 34 mpg out on the highway.

With a slightly larger 2.5 liter engine, it’s not too surprising that the Rogue gets a mile per gallon less in both the urban and rural settings. It’s also predictable that when going from two-wheel drive to all-wheel drive, an option available in both vehicles, they both lose another mile per gallon in fuel economy.

Something that may be surprising, considering the fuel economy comparisons, is engine power. Employing direct injection technology, the Honda CR-V motor generates 185 horsepower that compares favorably to the 170 horsepower produced by the Nissan Rogue. To complement its better mileage, the CR-V also possesses a larger 15.3 gallon tank compared to the Nissan Rogue’s 14.5 gallon tank.

Safety Technology

Though crossovers aren’t as massive as their SUV predecessors, they compensate by incorporating the crumple zones typical of cars. Still, some models manage better in safety tests than others. The 2015 Honda CR-V has produced better results in government crash tests than its Rogue counterpart. Especially in front-end collisions, the CR-V has received a 5-star rating for front driver-side impact endurance and 4 stars for front passenger-side impact. The 2015 Nissan Rogue only earned 4 stars on the driver’s side and 3 stars on the passenger’s side. In terms of active safety features, both come with anti-lock brakes, front and side airbags, rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring, and stability control. They also offer collision warning systems and similar safety technology, but the CR-V offers the LaneWatch camera that’s activated with the right turn signal to provide an extra-wide image of the right side blind spot.

Driving Will Tell

As tough a competitor as the Nissan Rogue has proved to be, the Honda CR-V has held its own. Still, it only makes sense to visit a dealer like Crown Honda to personally experience the CR-V and know what it’s genuinely capable of.
