What Is a Tire Rotation and Why Do I Need It?

A tire rotation is a routine service completed at intervals set by your vehicle's manufacturer, usually the same time as your oil change and filter replacement. Depending on your vehicle's drivetrain, whether front or rear-wheel drive, your tires will be repositioned either front to back or side to side.

Why are tire rotations important? There are several reasons and benefits. By routinely rotating your tires, wear will be more evenly spread across all four tires, maximizing tread life. This is because each specific position on your vehicle puts different amounts and types of wear on a tireā€”for example, tires on the front of a front-wheel drive vehicle will absorb a larger amount of the torque and friction that's needed for turning, accelerating, and braking.

Having more even tread wear keeps the tread depth on your tires uniform, which helps keep traction and handling more consistent across all four tires. This means better cornering and braking performance.

How Do I Maintain My Tires?

Maintaining your tires not only helps your tires to last longer and improves how your vehicle handles, it also helps you save money. Here are several things you can do to maintain your tires:

  • Check your tire pressure every month. Tires can lose about a pound per square inch (PSI) of pressure monthly, in addition to losing pressure during colder weather. The wrong air pressure can affect handling and stopping distance and increase wear and tear. Plus, the correct air pressure in your tires can boost your fuel efficiency!
  • Have your tires balanced. Every tire and wheel has a heavy spot in it, even when brand-new. The weight is very small, but that small difference can cause vibration and uneven tire wear. Our team at Crown Honda can ensure your tires and wheels are balanced correctly to help maintain your tires.
  • Get your alignment checked. If your vehicle pulls or drifts to the right or left, or the steering wheel vibrates or shakes, your vehicle may not be aligned correctly. This can be caused by potholes, hitting a curb, or other issues. A small misalignment can reduce fuel efficiency and increase tire tread wear. If you think your alignment needs a checkup or if you have any other concerns, reach out to the Crown Honda team today.

How Do I Know I Need New Tires?

There's a simple test to see if you need new tires. Place a penny head-first into several tread grooves across the tire. If you see the top of Lincoln's head in many of the spots, your treads are shallow and worn and you may need new tires. If part of Lincoln's head is covered by the tread, you most likely don't need new tires.

While you're checking your tire tread depth, you can potentially catch other issues when inspecting your tires. Here are a few warning signs to watch for:

  • Excessive wear in the center of your tire tread may indicate that your tire is over-inflated.
  • Excessive wear on the shoulders of your tire may indicate that your tire is under-inflated.
  • Excessive wear on one side of your tire may indicate the incorrect camber angle.
  • Uneven tread wear may indicate poor wheel alignment.

If you spot any issues of concern on one or multiple of your tires, give us a call at Crown Honda and we'll help you find the right tires in Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg.
