For decades, the Honda Civic has ruled supreme in giving the people what they want in a compact vehicle: economy and efficiency, with a touch of reliability that the Honda brand is known for. However, in the past couple of years, rivals from other automakers have been quickly catching up with the Civic. One of them is the Hyundai Elantra, which has won converts with its interior flair and exterior flash. The Civic was redesigned to kick off its tenth production cycle for the 2016 model year. This keeps it a step or two ahead of vehicles like the Elantra, which carries over into 2017 with a complete redesign for its sixth production cycle the year before.

Performance

Both models come in a variety of trims and engine combinations. The 2016 Honda Civic outperforms its competition. Base trims are equipped with 2.0 L engines but when it comes to performance numbers, the 2016 Civic is more powerful. The Civic engine delivers 158 hp and 138 ft-lbs of torque while the 2017 Elantra make 147 hp and 132 ft-lbs of torque. Honda transfers that power through a CVT transmission for smoother and more efficient performance while Hyundai uses a traditional 6-speed shiftable automatic.

Efficency

The 2016 Honda Civic offers a sporty and efficient compact vehicle. Honda pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to deliver 31 mpg city / 42 mpg highway* on the EX-T trim. The CVT gets rid of gear shifting that is present on conventional automatic and manual transmissions, relying instead of a continuous range of effective gear ratios. This cuts down on the amount of energy spent on gear shifting. By comparison, the 2017 Hyundai Elantra—with a 2.0-liter motor can only manage to provide 28 city / 38 highway mpg*.

Options

Honda offers the 2016 Civic in a wider variety of trims. Choose from the base LX, step up to the next level with the EX trim. If you want more performance and features, step up to the EX-T and EX-L or the top of the line Touring model. The latter three trims are equipped with the 1.5 L turbocharged 4 cylinder motor and CVT transmission. In comparison, Hyundai only offers the 2017 Elantra in three different trims – the base SE, Eco, and top tier Limited. If you are looking for more variety and combinations of features, search no further than the 2016 Honda Civic.
