The best way to make sure you're on a level playing field with any seller is to do your homework. Come prepared with questions, and make sure that they are answered to your satisfaction before you make any deals. What should you ask?
- How many miles are on the car?
- What condition is it in?
- Has the vehicle been involved in an accident? How about a flood or other disaster?
- Do you have service records, computer codes, and owner’s manuals for this car?
- Have you made any after-market modifications to the vehicle?
- Is it still eligible for any warrantees?
- Is there a Carfax report available for this car?
- Can I take it for a test drive?
Getting the answers to these questions is key, because it will help you determine whether the vehicle you’re looking at is worth purchasing for the price being asked. If the seller cannot (or will not) provide information about the vehicle’s history, consider it a huge red flag! Even a vehicle that looks great on the outside could be a total lemon.
