Power and Performance

The base-level Honda Pilot is equipped with a larger motor than the Highlander. Yet, even though it's working with more power and a larger engine, the Pilot still manages to post fuel economy numbers that rival the Highlander's. That's some pretty impressive engineering. In fact, you won't match the performance numbers of the Pilot, even if you were to upgrade to the optional V6 in the Highlander. This could be one of the reasons the Honda Pilot was the most popular vehicle on Edmunds.com for 2014.

Comfort and Convenience

The Honda Pilot is much roomier than the Highlander with ample space for seven passengers, plus cargo room galore. This makes the Pilot a family favorite. Conversely, reviewers regularly comment on the Toyota Highlander's frustrating lack of cargo space. Besides having more power and enhanced capabilities, the Honda Pilot is just more versatile than the Toyota Highlander. All that extra space in the cargo area can also be quickly and easily converted into an 8th seat. If you want room to grow and space for all your stuff, the Pilot is far more accommodating than the Highlander. Plus, with its tighter turning radius, you'll be able to maneuver in and out of tight spaces more easily with the Pilot.

Economy and Efficiency

While fuel economy numbers are similar, the Pilot's larger gas tank and subsequent increased fuel capacity means that it offers a longer range than the Highlander. When you get more miles out of each tank, you'll spend less time at the gas station and more time on the road. Another factor at play here is superior power-to-weight ratio of the Pilot. With less heft to move, the powerful engine doesn't lose out on power and acceleration. This means that the Pilot can be driven assertively without becoming a gas-guzzler.
